Solo Piano Nocturnes
Stevenson’s third solo piano offering, Rzeszow - Solo Piano Nocturnes, is the result of three nocturnal location recording sessions in the recital room of Filharmonia Podkarpacka in the beautiful old town of Rzeszow, Poland. Douglas Whates engineered and produced the album and, having been resident in Rzeszow for some years, recommended the location. Boasting a magnificent Blüthner Model 1 Concert Grand, the recital room is a beautifully designed modern theatre with wonderfully resonant acoustics. The only caveat: in order to avoid any unwanted disturbances, the sessions would occur solely during the hours of night-time.
Alone, awake, in the wee small hours, one often feels a keen sense of tranquility and stillness, and with luck, an invigorating, creative energy. Solo Piano Nocturnes is a visceral response to the night itself. Tracks such as Concert Hall by Night, Spirits at Play, and Love The Stars You’re Under make immediate reference, but in fact all the tracks imbue a sense of the nocturnal.
The material is based on a variety of approaches: original compositions, several improvised variations on well known jazz, classical and folk themes, and entirely improvised abstract pieces. Solo Piano Nocturnes is due for release on iOcco Music in autumn 2021.
