“Adventures into a Bartok-jazz hinterland... bluesy grit... delicate, just-so expression...
Herald Scotland

“…a beguilingly inventive approach to pieces inspired by Bartók, Erik Satie, Duke Ellington and others. Stevenson exhibits nonchalant grace on the piano...
clever, witty and serious music...”

Improvised Etudes for Solo Piano

Originally commissioned for The Piano concert series at the Glasgow Royal Concert Halls in 2014, ‘Mikrovisations’ is a continually evolving series of improvised miniature études.
Inspired by Bartok’s great primer of piano mastery, Mikrokosmos, Stevenson’s ‘Mikrovisations’ are playfully hewn from his own eclectic musical language of jazz, classical and world folk music styles.

Based on original themes that range from the abstract to the accessibly melodic, Stevenson draws inspiration from some of the most innovative composers of the 20th Century including Bartok himself, Satie, Miles Davis and Steve Reich. There is a pedagogical aspect to any Mikrovisations performance with Stevenson discussing creative challenges and dissecting the various musical techniques that the studies offer up to the performer.
